Other ppl recognize this: the chances for salvaging the upgrade you want are less? Well, I figure it is the same story as for green drops: sometimes you are lucky, sometimes you are not...

I have received a total of 6 green items - 3 of them on one run through Grenths and Furnace.
The time I received three green items I was with a player group - for some reason I received 3 out of the 4 green items dropped.
I got the yakslapper, and wroths rod from killing the yakslapper guy - yup 2 green items in one kill. And then I got the green sword in SF - I was feeling pretty generous since I was already having a good run and I gave the sword to our other war (I am a hammer war and already have the good green hammer) who was a sword weilding warrior - Needless to say he greatly appreciative.
Yes I gave it to him - sorry for all of you that are grinding away trying to get it and would pay a billion trillion plat - I just felt like being one of the few nice guys out there.
I kinda think everyone should be somewhat generous with these itmes as it seems before long everyone will be weilding them... Then again I could be wrong.

Yeah.. its all about being lucky. Also i guess A-net can detect if you been farming at Sorrow Furnace for a long time so that it will restrict your drops. Like me, i got two green items from bosses drop and couple blue, purple, and gold stuffs from different enemies and chests but lately when i go back to SF, i get nothing but white regular items or just plain golds.

Hi everyone *waves*
I've been working on my own theory as to how drops of varying rarities work, whether white, blue, purple, or gold. For about a month, I've been taking all 4 of my characters out to the same locations, with an equal amount of henchman only, to see if there were any differences in the drops for each character.
Facts:
All 4 characters are level 20, ascended
All 4 characters are of different primary classes
All 4 characters have completed the final Hell's Precipice mission
All 4 characters do not have an equal amount of XP points
Elementalist/Mesmer 1,200,000 XP
Necromancer/Monk 400,000 XP
Ranger/Monk 350,000 XP
Warrior/Necromancer 220,000 XP
Thanks for being patient, here's my 'theory' and possible evidence:
My elementalist, under the same conditions and environment as the other 3 characters, hasn't received a gold (or even purple) drop for ages. All boss drops are either white, or blue (if lucky), and 75% of normal kills are simply money drops. Shiverpeak chests open with 90% purple armors of which 90% are minor runes, and 10% gold armors of which have all been major runes.
Now, with my necromancer or ranger, I get roughly 1-2 gold drops through an entire 'outting' (IOW not mapping back to town, but rezoning occasionally) and about 1-2 purple ones. Shiverpeak chests usually drop weapons rather than armors (runes).
And finally, my warrior warrants the best everytime now. Always 1-3 gold drops, 2-3 purple drops, and chests drop gold weapons about 90% of the time, and gold armors which I've ID'd having 4 superior runes now (in about 20 trips through Grenth's).
Again, thanks for your patience, but in a month's time, the experience for all my characters have stayed in that order of highest to lowest, and the rate of drops have also stayed the same for them.
I'm not claiming anything, just pointing out a possibility that the XP of the character has a decisive role in item drops and their values. I firmly believe that henchman vs. PCs has no factor, only the less in your group, the better your odds of actually getting a drop (but the value of the drops still remain the same regardless).
Thanks everyone

*agrees with Rahl*
As evidenced by the XP, my favorite is my elementalist. And she never receives quality drops, whether in a full henchman group, partial henchman group, all player group, or even alone.
My warriorette has managed to find 3/4 of my equipment I use for all 4 characters to this day (I started roughly the 2nd week GuildWars was released), and that's when I have 7 henchman going through Grenth's, and eventually Sorrow's Furnace.

I had maybe 1.5 mil XP when Razorstone dropped for me. Maybe 1.3 mil for the Cleaver. Various other pretty good items, gold and green, dropped inbetween. Before the update, I never found a quality rare weapon by myself. So the XP thing really isn't true, at least for me.

Hi Savio
Could you post your PvE character's XP(s)? And also wondering if you have a chance, go to the same area, for the same amount of time, with each character and see if you have a difference? I wasn't including the Sorrow Green items as legitimate drops, as they've been deemed 'Sorrow/Grenth' specific area only.
Maybe there's a connection between all PvE character XP on a single account, and averaged as a 'mean' to distribute a single character's drop % and value? Perhaps the difference between your largest and smallest XP among PvE characters? I don't know really, but maybe if others tried this just once and gave feedback? Try using only henchman (not even 1 other PC) and use the same amount of henchman each time (the ones you choose to bring I haven't found as being a noticeable factor) for each of your characters. Use at least 3 shiverpeak keys on your way too.
I'm going to try again here shortly. So far, my warriorette is getting the best drops of all 4 of my characters since Sorrow opened, and all have been used regularly for the ongoing quests inside. And that's as of yesterday evening. Good luck and thanks

That's a very, very interesting observation. I never even thought about the possibility of the character XP having an effect on drop odds. I will have to give it a twirl with some 200k+ xp characters, and see if my drops improve or not.

It's definitely luck, i have found three gold items: Worth's Holy Rod, Rago's Fire staff and Thorgalls Shield. Granted these aren't the best items, but it's definitely random.
I have also found plenty of Runes etc.

The notion of XP crossed my mind but i never really gave it much thought. It would explain why my monk (4.18 million) gets practically nothing and my ranger and warrior (roughly 500,000 i think) get average drops.
I also noticed that on the night of the SF update, the drops were amazing, even from chests but soon afterwards, it turned really bad.
I think Anet must be able to tweak the drops at their discretion, to avoid the economy being flooded with greens, golds and runes.
I may try a similar experiment using the xp theory myself. Nice job!
EDITED for incorrect XP on monk.

Maybe Anet could consider putting in more intelligent algorithms, so that drops are distributed more evenly - possibly rewarding players based on time played, and not just leave it to the old 'random luck generator'.

I went into Grenth's with a PuG last night. The first boss we came to was Wroth, and he immediately dropped the Yakslapper (painful ). So ok, who's telling me that travelling with henchies isn't nerf'd.
Then I took five henchies, and guess what - first boss, Gargash, dropped the Stinger! So it is completely random, but I think it's just a little too random at the mo. They just need to improve the drop ratio a bit.

Is there really a basis for this observation?
I mean it could be psychological you know :P
Another possibility is you have been killing the same creature type too often (as opposed to your character having too much XP), that is something that is not addressed in the little experiment too.
